Religious admonitions against sexual relations between same-sex individuals particularly men long stigmatized such behaviour, but most legal codes in Europe were silent on the subject of homosexuality. Beginning in the 16th century, lawmakers in Britain began to categorize homosexual behaviour as criminal rather than simply immoral.
SINCEsame-sex couples have had a constitutional right to marry—yet Americans still enjoy no federal protection from workplace discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or transgender identity. In some two dozen states that do not have their own civil-rights umbrella for LGBT people, a gay employee can return to the office from his honeymoon and be fired. Transgender people, too, have no recourse in these states when their bosses fire or demote them for presenting themselves as their preferred gender.
Discrimination continues to exist against minorities of all kinds, including towards members of the LGBTQ community. Treatments for individuals exhibiting these traits varied from sterilization and castration to lobotomies and conversion therapy. In addition to the risk of being subjected to these traumatic therapies, societal expectations led many to adjust their behaviors and appearance in order to pass as straight.
